IGC sent a letter to Canadian leaders regarding the Statement condemning hate speech, Islamophobia and false Narratives about Bosniaks and Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Institute for Research of Genocide of Canada sent a letter to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Robert Oliphant, regarding the Statement condemning hate speech, Islamophobia and false narratives about Bosniaks and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dear Parliamentary Secretary Oliphant,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to inform you of a significant joint statement issued on March 18, 2026, in Sarajevo by a broad coalition of political, religious, academic, and cultural representatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The initiative was led by key Bosniak institutions, including the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina and was endorsed by senior officials at the state and entity levels, as well as prominent public figures.

Given your longstanding leadership within the Government of Canada in supporting peace, stability, and the territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, we believe this development is of particular relevance to your work.

The statement strongly condemns hate speech, Islamophobia, and the spread of false narratives targeting Bosniaks and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It raises particular concern about disinformation, demonization of the Bosniak community and warns against rhetoric that echoes patterns seen prior to the conflict of the 1990s. At the same time, it reaffirms a commitment to pluralism, interreligious dialogue, democratic values, and the preservation of peace and stability in the country.

Given the potential implications for regional stability, this development is being closely followed by stakeholders across the Western Balkans.
